Mairi Aitken graduated in drawing and painting from The Glasgow School of Art. After gaining a teaching certificate from Jordanhill College of Education she went on to teach in a number of schools in both Scotland and England.

In 1994 she took part in a cultural exchange between the twinned towns of Bishopbriggs and Corbeil-Essones, which involved workshops and exhibitions in both Scotland and France. She exhibits regularly with, and was recently President of, The Glasgow Society of Women Artists and is also a member of the Paisley Art Institute where in 1997 she won the Arnold Clark Prize. In 1996 she won the Strathkelvin Council Purchase Prize and in 1997 and 1998 won the East Dunbartonshire Council Purchase Prize. Her work has been acquired by schools, Councils, The Royal Bank of Scotland and is in private collection in France, Zurich, Cyprus and the UK.
Landscape, still life and people figure in her work, which for the most part is carried out in gouache and acrylic.
